How to file a labour complaint in the UAE

If your employer has not paid your salary or gratuity, or has broken your contract in another way, you can raise a complaint with MOHRE. It is free to file and you do not need a lawyer.

What you can complain about

• Unpaid or late salary
• Unpaid gratuity or final settlement
• Unpaid overtime or leave
• Unfair dismissal
• An employer holding your passport
• Other breaches of your contract or the Labour Law

Before you file

Raise the problem with your employer in writing first and keep a copy. Then gather your documents:

• Emirates ID and passport copy
• Your employment contract and labour card details
• Payslips or bank statements showing what was paid
• Your resignation or termination letter
• Emails or messages about the dispute
• Your own calculation of what you are owed

How to file

1. Choose a channelUse the MOHRE website, the MOHRE mobile app, the call centre or a service centre.
2. Submit your complaintGive your details, your employer's details and a short, factual description of the problem.
3. Keep your reference numberYou will use it to follow the complaint.
4. Take part in mediationMOHRE contacts both sides and tries to reach an amicable settlement.
5. Decision or referralMOHRE can issue a binding decision on smaller claims. Otherwise, if there is no settlement, it refers the case to the labour court.

Time limit

Labour claims must be brought within a set period after the employment ends. Under the current rules this is two years, but do not wait. Evidence is easier to gather, and your visa position is simpler, when you act early.
